Eligibility

Individual Commercial Use License

Suggestion

I worked for an educational institute, i.e., a university. I see that for students, you have a student license, but we also have an educational license.

I got the pop-up every time I started the software.

Alternatives Considered

If you have a one-time buy-in price, this is also fine. However, a yearly cost of more than $100 is a bit too much in this case for a tiling window manager...

Your employer, ETH Zurich, made 2 billion CHF in revenue in 2024, of which 1.4 billion CHF was via federal financial contribution

The individual commercial use license functions as a mechanism to empower end users to mediate corporate contributions to the financial sustainability of independent software

If an employer does not currently accept reimbursement requests for software that is required for an individual to perform their job, then the question becomes whether an individual is motivated to either advocate for the improvement of their own working conditions to ensure they have access to the tools and materials they need to perform their functions well, or if they care enough about generating shareholder value for a company that doesn't provide the tools and materials they need that they are willing to invest in them from their own salary

Addendum:

This being said, if you or any other worker employed by a university emails me from a valid email address associated with your educational institution to request an exception, I have no way of knowing whether or not you are actually a student, so I will undoubtedly approve your request
