Bug description

I installed using the Linux installation method provided in the official documentation. When running for the first time, I couldn't create a key, and the output command displayed "No private key file at path, creating... path= ", with nothing after "=" sign.

Environment

  • OS:Ubuntu 22.04 TLS
  • Tailscale version:v0.22.3

(not a maintainer, but worked through a similar issue recently).

I think the issue is that your config template was copied from main, and no longer works for v0.22.3: in a59aab2081, the private_key_path config was replaced with derp.server.private_key_path.

The config you pasted linked looks like it's for the upcoming v0.23.0 release, but v0.22.3 is still expecting an entry in private_key_path.

Your best bet may be to copy the config example from the v0.22.3 tag.

edit: if you don't want to copy the whole config from that template, you can probably also just add this to the bottom of your current config file:

I think the issue is that your config template was copied from main, and no longer works for v0.22.3: in a59aab20811cc42c7501ea9aab88a12c2ba5d47e, the `private_key_path` config was replaced with `derp.server.private_key_path`. The config you pasted linked looks like it's for the upcoming v0.23.0 release, but v0.22.3 is still expecting an entry in `private_key_path`. Your best bet may be to copy the [config example](https://github.com/juanfont/headscale/blob/v0.22.3/config-example.yaml) from the v0.22.3 tag. edit: if you don't want to copy the whole config from that template, you can probably also just add this to the bottom of your current config file: ``` # Private key used to encrypt the traffic between headscale # and Tailscale clients. # The private key file will be autogenerated if it's missing. # private_key_path: /var/lib/headscale/private.key ```

Successfully resolved by installing the alpha version.
