I've deleted a number of podcasts from the server instance using a web browser, but the ios application holds on to these podcasts and it's not clear how I might force a refresh of the catalogue.

This is either a UX issue making sync more prominent or a feature request.

Did you download them? If so, use the hamburger menu on the right, select Downloads, and on this page you can delete them.

Downloads do not automatically delete at this time if the item has been removed from the server.
