What was the Problem?
I have several books that are 20+ hours in length that are 1 big mp3 file (1.8 gig). Almost every time I start playback, I need to either fast forward or rewind to find the actual location in the book I was listening to last time. Sometimes, even mid-listen, if I rewind one click, it moves to a different place in the book, and I then need to find my place again. It seems like it is having difficulty with keeping track of its exact location, and it picks back up where it thinks it is, but that location isn't the same place....I don't know where the 'drift' is coming from.
Steps to Reproduce the Issue
I can provide you a copy of the MP3 file...listen to the book for a few mins, then stop and start again....it's fairly reliable to not work properly.
What was Expected?
I would expect reliable 'current position' for start and stop

It sounds like your file is variable bitrate (VBR). You have a few options:
Is this with local files or streaming from the server?

Ok....I've moved onto the next book in the series, continuing to have the same issue unfortunately. I have turned on mp3 index seeking, and I have turned off auto-rewind, so that it's doing as minimum with the book as possible....still having issues. Ran an ffprobe of the file and here is the output. I don't see anything about a variable bitrate there....but you would be the best to tell me if I'm wrong
oh, and this is a file from the server that the android client downloaded....so, local from the file on my phone.

I am experiencing a similar problem using web app and FLAC files from GraphicAudio. I am thinking they are also VBR by design.
I am curious to why VBR is causing these problems? Why not sync time?

VBR does not have a fixed mapping of time to location in memory. With CBR files, you can easily seek anywhere in the file by knowing the bitrate and time to seek to. With VBR, you have to analyze the varying bitrate from the beginning until you reach the time you want to be at. This is what the mp3 index seeking is in the app settings, but I'm not sure if that works for FLAC because it is just a setting for the built in audio player.

I am having the same issue, the resume playback is typically starting about 30 to 60 seconds ahead of where I paused the book.
Oddly enough, it has been occurring for other books from the same series that @ljlongwing reported (He Who Fights with Monsters 1, 2, and 3) they all have exhibited the same issue and I have not seen this issue before with other books I have listened to.
I will try turning on the "enable mp3 index seeking", but the files do not appear to be VBR. They are showing up for me as 64kbps, stereo, 44.100 kHz

download the books to my phone, and then used another player to play
them....
